Eight Lake Macquarie High School Students have set out on a 200 kilometre bike ride from Lake Macquarie to Sydney as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Leadership Program.
To receive bronze or silver awards, the students must undertake an ‘Adventurous Journey' that encourages problem solving, team work and determination.
Ethan Linsley, a year nine student said, "We will cycle to Somersby via the Watagan Mountains before riding on to Hornsby and finishing in the Sydney CBD.
"We were a little bit worried about road safety, but having done a lot of research and preparation, we have found safe bicycle routes that will ensure we are kept off main roads."
The students will record every kilometre of the journey with helmet cams to create a documentary that the school will showcase.
Lake Macquarie High School teacher, Richard McMahon said he is riding with the students for safety and has been involved with the activity since its planning stages.
"I've assisted with the preparation of the activity, but I've mostly tried to encourage the students to take the initiative.
"It's all about teamwork, motivation and organisation," Mr McMahon said.
The group will share the trials and tribulations they face over the next few days with their fellow peers to promote leadership and perseverance at the high school.
Photos will be published in the Gallery as they come in
