English: Stage 6

The study of English is central to the learning and development of students in NSW and is the mandatory subject in the Stage 6 curriculum. The importance of English in the curriculum is a recognition of its role as the national language and increasingly as the language of international communication. Proficiency in English enables students to take their place as confident, articulate communicators, critical and imaginative thinkers and active participants in society.

What do we offer?

  • Extension English: For students keen to pursue a career in areas such as writing, communications, law or English teaching
  • Advanced English: For students with ability and an interest in English and focused on maximising their university entrance scores. Recommended for courses where a high level of comprehension, analysis and written expression is required. It is a co-requisite for Extension.
  • Standard English: For students intending to continue to university, focused on careers where good communication is important but not the high level of analytical skill required by Advanced English. Or for those wanting to 'keep their options open'.
  • English Studies: For students not intending to go to university after the HSC, but keen to find employment or gain TAFE qualifications leading to a trade career. This course is more focused on practical skills: teamwork, project management, communication skill development, career development and citizenship. Students studying this course will not receive an ATAR score but do qualify for the HSC.
